Not medical advice
The content on Fight Prep Lab is provided for general informational and educational purposes only. It is not medical advice, and it is not a substitute for diagnosis, treatment or guidance from a qualified healthcare professional.
We are athletes and coaches writing about our own experience and about publicly available research. We are not doctors, dietitians or physiotherapists, unless an article explicitly states that it was written or reviewed by one, in which case their credentials appear on the page.
Talk to a professional before you act
Always consult a physician, registered dietitian, or another qualified health provider before starting a new training programme, changing your diet, attempting to lose or gain weight, using supplements, or acting on anything you read here. Never ignore professional medical advice or delay seeking it because of something you read on this Site.
If you think you may have a medical emergency, call your local emergency number immediately.
Weight management and weight cutting
Combat sports involve competing in weight categories, and this Site discusses how athletes prepare for weigh-ins. Rapid weight loss and dehydration carry real risks, including heat illness, kidney injury, impaired performance, cardiovascular strain, and in extreme cases death. These risks are higher for young athletes, for athletes with existing medical conditions, and for anyone attempting large or rapid reductions.
Nothing on this Site should be read as encouragement to lose weight rapidly, to dehydrate yourself, or to exceed the limits set by your federation, your school, or your physician. Where we describe what athletes do, we do so to inform, not to recommend.
Always follow the rules and weight certification procedures of your governing body. Where our guidance and your federation’s rules or your doctor’s advice differ, follow your federation and your doctor.
Young athletes
This Site is written for adults. If you are under 18, do not attempt any weight management approach described here without the direct supervision of your coach, your parents or guardians, and a physician. Many federations set minimum body fat levels and maximum weekly weight loss rates for young competitors; those rules exist to protect you and come before anything written here.
Disordered eating
Preparing for weight categories can affect your relationship with food and with your body. If you are struggling with eating, with compulsive exercise, or with how you think about your weight, please speak to a doctor or a qualified professional. Support is available, and asking for it is not a weakness.
Individual results vary
Training and nutrition responses differ between individuals. What works for one athlete may not work for another, and may be unsafe for some. Any results described on this Site are specific to the person described and are not a promise of what you will experience.
No liability
You use the information on this Site at your own risk. To the fullest extent permitted by law, Fight Prep Lab and its authors accept no liability for any loss, injury or damage arising from the use of, or reliance on, any content published here.
